Statement from the Minister Regarding Hampstead Traffic Fatalities

The unspeakably tragic events of Monday, Feb. 6, have shaken and saddened all of us in Ontario. In the blink of an eye, the most devastating motor vehicle crash in our province's history claimed 11 lives and badly injured three other men. On behalf of our government, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the 11 men. Our prayers are also with the three injured men in hospital.

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is making all arrangements and covering the costs to return the men to their mourning families. The Board is also offering bereavement counselling services to the families. Ministry of Labour inspectors are currently working with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to determine what factors might have precipitated this terrible crash. Ministry staff will also be in contact with family members and will continue to reach out throughout the course of the Ministry's investigation.

The Honourable Linda Jeffrey
Minister of Labour
