I was saddened to learn of the death of former MPP and Minister of Labour Robert Elgie. Robert dedicated his life to public service and touched the lives of countless Ontarians as an MPP, doctor, lawyer and educator. Robert believed that every worker should be treated with dignity and fairness, qualities that guided his time as Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Board from 1985 to 1991. During his tenure as Minister of Labour, he committed himself to improving workplace health and safety in Ontario and enriching the lives of workers and citizens in this province. He brought Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act into law and made significant changes that allowed for the investigation of workplace discrimination under Ontario’s Human Rights Code. These are lasting improvements in the lives of Ontario’s workers.

Mr. Elgie also served as Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations and Minister of Community and Social Services during his time as an MPP. Prior to his political career he practiced as a neurosurgeon, was Chief of Medical Staff at Scarborough General Hospital, and as well had earned a law degree. His desire to help others defined his life and he will be missed.
