Ontario Creates Construction Health and Safety Advisory Group

Ontario has established a Construction Health and Safety Advisory Group to assist government in the development and implementation of a Construction Health and Safety Action Plan aimed at decreasing the number of injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the construction sector.

Ontario is already acting on some key initiatives that will support the Action Plan, including:

  • Mandatory Working at Heights Training Standards for workers on construction projects who use specified methods of fall protection.
  • The development of entry-level health and safety training standards that will apply to all workers on construction projects.
  • Proposals to strengthen health and safety protection for construction workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act through various amendments to the Construction Projects Regulation.
  • Efforts to use risk assessment and analytics to identify top hazards in the construction sector.

Construction Health and Safety Advisory Group

The advisory group will work with Parliamentary Assistant Mike Colle and the province's Chief Prevention Officer to provide strategic advice to government on how to best implement the action plan.

The advisory group includes labour and employer representatives from various sub-sectors of the construction industry. They include:

  • Labour representatives from a broad range of construction sectors.
    • Joe Dowdall, International Union of Operating Engineers
    • James Hogarth, Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario
    • Cosmo Mannella, LiUNA Ontario Provincial District Council
    • Mike Yorke, Carpenters' District Council of Ontario
  • Employer representatives from large construction, home building and the home renovation sectors.
    • Mike Wieninger, PCL Constructors Inc.
    • Steve Riddell, Ellis Don Corporation
    • Tom McLaughlin, Thomasfield Homes Ltd.
    • Dave McLean, Mattamy Homes
    • Samuel Lapidus, Keystone Ridge Developments Ltd.
