Summer Jobs at the Ministry of Labour

Providing opportunities to law students and forging valuable connections with the legal academic community are two of the reasons for the success of the Ministry of Labour's summer student co-op program.

The first week involves intensive training delivered by lawyers and directors from the Ministry of the Attorney General, including the MOL Legal Services Branch, the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS) Legal Services Branch and the Office of Legislative Counsel as well as senior officials from the MOL and the MGCS.

Following the training, the students take part in two rotations. All students spend eight weeks at the Legal Services Branch and eight weeks with one of the following:

  • Ontario Labour Relations Board
  • Employment Practices Branch
  • Employment Labour and Policy Branch
  • Workplace Insurance, Health and Safety Policy Branch
  • Inspections, Investigations and Enforcement Secretariat
  • Occupational Health and Safety Branch
  • Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

The rotation system is designed to give the students exposure to all of MOL's work encompassing the legal, operational and policy aspects of the organization. The program provides students with a well-structured work experience including highly specialized supervision and instruction.

The Legal Services Branch has a committed relationship with law students through its articling program. The summer student program allows for an association with future lawyers at an even earlier stage in their new careers. The MOL will benefits from the hard work of the students, while the students gain important work experience.
