On Monday, May 7th, Ontario Labour Minister Steve Peters officially opened the trade show at the National Fire and Emergency Expo in Mississauga, hosted by the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC). Showcased at the Expo was the DriveWise booth, a virtual reality simulator used to train firefighter drivers. The simulator presents drivers with different conditions including fog, aggressive drivers and deer darting out in front the truck as firefighters respond to a fire.
On May 3rd Minister Peters, along with Premier McGuinty, announced the introduction of an amendment to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) which allows the government to make regulations affecting Ontario’s full-time, part-time and volunteer firefighters, fire investigators and forest firefighters.
Bill 221, Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act (Presumptions for Firefighters), 2007 was subsequently passed later on that day by the Ontario legislature with all-party support. The bill received Royal Assent on May 4th.
