In the mining sector employers and workers should always keep in mind…

Workers are required to wear:

  1. Adequate hearing protection, protective boots, hardhats and safety glasses
  2. Adequate reflective material on headgear and outer clothing
  3. Proper protective clothing where exposed to heat (in smelter/furnace environment)
  4. Fall arrest where exposed to fall hazard

It is good practice for workers to wear:

  1. Bright coloured clothing
  2. Fall arrest harnesses equipped with trauma straps

Employers should make sure:

  1. Cap lamps, respiratory and fall arrest equipment are available, well maintained and used where required
  2. Programs exist for the selection, fitting and maintenance of respiratory equipment
  3. Cleaning supplies for safety glasses are readily available
  4. All workers are properly fitted with Personal Protective Equipment by a competent person
