Commercial Diving Safety

Safe At Work Ontario

Commercial divers can be seriously injured or killed if proper procedures aren’t in place.

Workers:

  1. Know your diving operations plan
  2. Know the emergency procedures in your contingency plan
  3. Be prepared to respond to hazards at underwater dive sites
  4. Be trained in administering first aid and medical oxygen
  5. Report hazards to your supervisor
  6. Know your right to refuse unsafe work

Employers, Owners, Constructors & Diving Supervisors:

  1. Prepare written operations and contingency plans
  2. Brief all dive site workers on plans
  3. Ensure effective communications between dive site and emergency services
  4. Ensure diving personnel are properly trained
  5. Ensure dive site workers are trained to administer oxygen to injured divers
  6. Ensure adequate oxygen supply in case of emergency
  7. Ensure first aid equipment can deliver 100% oxygen

To report incidents, critical injuries or fatalities, call the Ministry of Labour at 1-877-202-0008. In an emergency, always call 911 immediately.
