In the largest revamp of Ontario’s worker safety system in 30 years, a series of new amendments to the Occupational Health and Act and Workplace Safety Insurance Act have passed.
A four-month, province-wide enforcement blitz focusing on new and young workers at industrial and health care workplaces began May 1. Inspectors are checking for compliance with instruction, training and supervision requirements, and that proper safety measures and equipment are in place. A poster and fact sheets are available.
Ministry of Labour inspectors will focus on safety at surface diamond drilling operations in Northern Ontario during increased enforcement in June. The mining inspectors will check for non-compliance, poor practices and other hazards that could endanger diamond drill workers. A poster and fact sheet will be available on June 1.
Throughout May, Ontario increased enforcement at homebuilding project sites to ensure that workplaces are complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Now, download new fact sheets focusing on framing and roofing; concrete forming, and trenching and excavation safety.
Ontario has re-appointed Steve Mahoney as the Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
The Ministry of Labour prosecutes persons and corporations for violating the Employment Standards Act and its regulations. Such violations could include failure to pay wages or provide required time off. Employment Standards convictions in January/February are now posted online.
